Opened in 1991 as China's first specialist silk museum, the Suzhou Silk Museum explores an industry that has been closely connected with the city for thousands of years.
The museum traces the complete silk-making story, from silkworm cultivation and silk reeling to traditional weaving, historic textiles, clothing and modern production. Exhibits include historic looms and demonstrations of traditional techniques, while the museum also plays an important role in preserving Suzhou textile traditions including Song brocade (宋锦) and Zhang satin (漳缎).
This remains the main Suzhou Silk Museum at 2001 Renmin Road; the newer Silk Museum Art Space on Pingjiang Road is a separate satellite venue.
