East Meets West Through Silk, Art and AI
Two new international exhibitions at the Suzhou Silk Museum explore what happens when one of Suzhou’s oldest traditions meets contemporary art, design and artificial intelligence.
Both use silk as the starting point, but take very different approaches. One brings together British and Chinese influences through handcrafted tie-dye and AI-assisted art, while the other is a Sino-Italian collaboration created by Italian designer Raffaele La Marca.

The Art of Modern Tie-Dye: Where Time Meets Silk
A Sino-British Touring Exhibition of Handcrafted Tie-Dye & AI Innovation
This touring exhibition explores the meeting point between traditional tie-dye, contemporary aesthetics and digital technology.
Silk and tie-dye are both deeply rooted in textile history, but here traditional techniques are placed alongside AI and contemporary artistic practice. The exhibition looks at how craft can evolve rather than disappear in the age of new technology, bringing together handmade processes and digital experimentation.
The exhibition is supported by the China National Arts Fund and forms part of a wider touring programme.

Grid & Grace: East Meets West
A Sino-Italian Dialogue on Suzhou Silk in the Age of AI
Italian designer Raffaele La Marca spent five months in Suzhou exploring how artificial intelligence could interact with Suzhou silk.
The resulting exhibition places AI-generated design and traditional silk weaving on the same creative playing field. Rather than presenting technology as a replacement for traditional craftsmanship, the project explores how the two can work together — and how silk can continue to carry cultural ideas between East and West in a new technological era.
The exhibition is co-organised by Suzhou Silk Museum, the School of Art of Soochow University and the University of Campania in Italy.
