Xiyuan Temple is one of Suzhou’s most atmospheric Buddhist temples, combining an active place of worship with leafy gardens, historic architecture and a large landscaped pond.
The temple traces its history back to the Yuan Dynasty, although much of the complex seen today was rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty. Unlike many temples arranged almost entirely around ceremonial halls, Xiyuan has a strong garden element, reflecting a period when part of the site was developed as a private garden.
One of the highlights is the Arhat Hall, home to 500 gilded clay figures of Buddhist arhats. Each has an individual expression and pose, creating one of the temple’s most memorable interiors and an important surviving collection of Qing Dynasty Buddhist sculpture.
Beyond the main halls, paths lead through mature trees to the large release pond, crossed by bridges and dotted with traditional pavilions. The quieter garden setting makes Xiyuan a pleasant place to explore at a slower pace than some of Suzhou’s busier historic attractions.
The temple has also become known for its resident cats and simple vegetarian food. Visitors can stop for traditional vegetarian noodles and snacks within the complex, adding to Xiyuan’s distinctly local character.
