Tucked away beside Lion Grove Garden, Suzhou Folk Customs Museum offers a fascinating look at the traditions and everyday life behind the city's more famous gardens and canals.
The museum occupies the former ancestral hall of the Bei family, whose descendants include celebrated architect I. M. Pei. First opened as a museum in 1986, it underwent a major refurbishment in 2024–25 and reopened in June 2025 with completely renewed exhibitions.
The permanent displays are organised around three themes: Enjoying the Four Seasons, Savouring Three Meals and Rites of a Lifetime. Together they explore traditional Suzhou festivals, food, marriage and family customs, childhood, celebrations and the rituals that once accompanied different stages of life.
Exhibits range from elaborate traditional lanterns and festival decorations to clothing, household objects and ceremonial pieces. Highlights include displays relating to the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese New Year and Suzhou's distinctive tradition of welcoming the Gods of Wealth.
It's a relatively small museum, making it particularly easy to combine with Lion Grove, Suzhou Museum or a walk through the surrounding historic lanes. Allow around 45 minutes to 1½ hours.
