Suzhou Pingjiang History Culture Quarters is one of the best places in Suzhou to experience the old city on foot. Centred on PingJiang Road and its canal, the neighbourhood is a maze of narrow lanes, stone bridges, whitewashed houses and waterways, mixed today with teahouses, cafés, restaurants, boutiques and traditional entertainment.

The wider historic district covers around 116 hectares and is considered the best-preserved historic neighbourhood within Suzhou's old city. Its street-and-canal layout can be traced back more than 2,500 years and remains remarkably similar to that recorded on maps of the city during the Song dynasty.

Streets Beside the Water
Pingjiang is one of the clearest places to see Suzhou's traditional “double chessboard” city plan: streets and waterways run alongside one another, connected by lanes and small bridges.
The main stretch of PingJiang Road is the busiest, but the historic district extends well beyond it. Crossing the bridges and wandering into the quieter side lanes gives a much better sense of the residential neighbourhood that still exists behind the shops and cafés. Suzhou Government Website
You'll also find several important cultural sites within the district, including the China Kunqu Museum and China Suzhou Pingtan Museum, making Pingjiang particularly good for combining sightseeing with some of Suzhou's traditional performing arts.

Canal Boats
Small sightseeing boats run along the narrow canals through the district, giving a very different view of the old houses and bridges from water level.

You don't need a boat to enjoy Pingjiang, but it's one of the more atmospheric places in central Suzhou to experience the city's historic canal network.

Suzhou Scene Tip
Don't treat PingJiang Road as a single street to walk from one end to the other. Cross the bridges and explore the side lanes. The main road can become extremely busy, while quieter streets only a few minutes away often feel completely different.

Late afternoon is a particularly good time to visit, allowing you to see the district in daylight and stay as the lanterns and lights begin appearing along the canals.

It's also easy to combine with Suzhou Museum, the Humble Administrator's Garden and Lion Grove Garden nearby.
