Panmen Scenic Spot preserves one of the most remarkable surviving pieces of ancient Suzhou. At its heart is PanMen Gate (盘门), an ancient fortified gateway where land and water entrances stand side by side. Together with RuiGuang Pagoda (瑞光塔) and WuMen Bridge (吴门桥), it forms the celebrated Three Sights of Panmen (盘门三景).
The site offers a very different view of Suzhou from its famous classical gardens. Suzhou was once a walled and moated city, with fortified gates controlling movement along both roads and waterways. At Panmen, visitors can still explore part of that ancient defensive system.
An Ancient Gateway into Suzhou
PanMen stands at the southwestern corner of Suzhou's old city. A city gate has occupied this area since the ancient Kingdom of Wu, although the structures seen today are the result of later rebuilding and restoration.
What makes PanMen particularly unusual is its combination of land and water gates. The fortified complex includes inner and outer entrances and a defensive enclosure between them. Boats travelling along Suzhou's waterways could enter the old city through the water gates beneath the fortifications.
Visitors can also walk along the surviving city wall, with views over the waterways, gate complex and surrounding historic landscape.

RuiGuang Pagoda
Rising above the scenic area is RuiGuang Pagoda (瑞光塔), one of Panmen's most recognisable landmarks.
A pagoda was first established on the site in the third century, while the present structure largely dates from the Northern Song dynasty. The seven-storey, eight-sided pagoda rises approximately 43 metres above the surrounding gardens.
Its long history became even more remarkable in 1978, when a hidden collection of Buddhist treasures was discovered inside the pagoda.
WuMen Bridge
Just outside PanMen, WuMen Bridge (吴门桥) crosses the old city moat.
The imposing single-arch stone bridge once formed an important approach to the city gate. Seen together with PanMen and RuiGuang Pagoda, it completes the traditional Three Sights of Panmen.
It's worth walking beyond the scenic area's main paths to see the bridge and gate from across the water. Some of the best views of the PanMen complex are from this side.

Suzhou's Old City Walls
For centuries, Suzhou was surrounded by defensive walls and waterways. Much of the old city wall eventually disappeared, making the surviving fortifications around PanMen particularly significant.
The water gate also reveals just how central canals once were to everyday life in Suzhou. These weren't simply picturesque waterways running through the city — boats entered and left old Suzhou through fortified gates built directly into its walls.
Suzhou Scene Tip
Allow time to explore both sides of the water. The combination of PanMen Gate, RuiGuang Pagoda and WuMen Bridge is best appreciated from several different viewpoints rather than from inside the scenic area alone.
PanMen is also a particularly good choice after visiting one or two of Suzhou's classical gardens. Here, the emphasis shifts from garden design to city walls, waterways, military defences and ancient Suzhou history.
