Shanghai International Light Festival — Jinji Lake Night
Shanghai International Light Festival comes to Suzhou for the first time, with Jinji Lake becoming the festival's first venue outside Shanghai.
Running for 28 days, Jinji Lake Night spreads light installations, projection mapping, lasers, interactive art and special events around the lake, linking Moon Harbour, Ligongdi, Harmony Times Square, Jinji Lake West, Jinji Stations 06 & 09 and other waterfront locations.
The organisers describe Shanghai International Light Festival as one of the world's three major light festivals, alongside the Festival of Lights in Lyon and Vivid Sydney. The Suzhou edition is built around four themes — Light & Shadow Suzhou, Splendid Suzhou, Tech Suzhou and Bountiful Suzhou — combining light art with technology, food, markets and activities around the lake.

Where to Start
Jinji Lake is big, and the festival is not concentrated in one location.
If you only have time to visit one area, start at Moon Harbour (月光码头). This is where you'll find two of the festival's main attractions — the giant Tracing the Light projection-mapping show and the Between Spaces installation.
From there, other installations and activities are spread around the lake.
For the first time, Shanghai International Light Festival has expanded beyond Shanghai, with Jinji Lake chosen as its first outside venue.
Tracing the Light 《溯光》
📍 Moon Harbour — south side of 688 Art & Fashion Space
One of the headline attractions is a giant projection-mapping show created especially for Jinji Lake Night.
Using the building itself as the screen, the six-minute show moves through five chapters, from the awakening of life and the building of civilisation to development, innovation and a new day.

Between Spaces 《间之间》
📍 Moon Harbour — southwest plaza
Seven iridescent art structures weave between nine mature camphor trees, creating an installation designed to change with its surroundings.
During the day, the reflective surfaces shift with the sky, trees and people moving around them. After dark, lighting transforms the structures and surrounding trees into a very different experience.
Between Spaces combines seven iridescent structures with nine mature camphor trees at Moon Harbour.
Eternity 《永恒》
📍 Jinji Lake
A laser show sends beams across the lake, using the night sky and water as part of the display and visually connecting with the Gate of the Orient and Jinji Lake's surrounding lights.
The show runs several times each evening. Because viewing conditions and schedules may change during the holiday period, check the current programme when you arrive.
Light Around the Lake
The festival continues well beyond Moon Harbour.
At Harmony Times Square, a giant illuminated butterfly forms one of the festival's most distinctive installations. Ligongdi features a series of love-themed light installations including Heartbeat, Confession, Love and Eternity.
At Jinji Station 09, you'll find a giant POP MART Zsiga installation together with a large floral arch made from more than 1,000 flowers. The floral installation runs from September 23 to October 16.
At Jinji Station 06, interactive projection and lighting continue towards the 883-metre Jinshuiwan Boardwalk, while Jinji Lake West combines the musical fountain with the illuminated Gate of the Orient.
Light installations are spread around Jinji Lake, including this giant butterfly at Harmony Times Square.
Jinji Lake Robot Block
📍 The Pearl - Suzhou Science and Cultural Arts Centre
📅 September 19–27 ONLY
Technology becomes part of the festival with the first Jinji Lake Robot Block, bringing AI and embodied-intelligence technology out of laboratories and into a public setting.
The programme includes three areas — Future Market, Future Show and Future Workshop — with products and demonstrations from around 20 technology companies. The opening programme included 14 different robots performing together, with humanoid robots, robot dogs and other embodied-intelligence technology on display.
The Jinji Lake Robot Block brings humanoid robots, robot dogs and interactive technology to the festival until September 27.
Jinji Lake Harvest Market
📍 Harmony Times Square — West Street
📅 September 25–27 & October 1–5
More than just lights, the festival also incorporates seasonal Suzhou food and local products.
The Jinji Lake Harvest Market (金鸡湖丰物集) brings together Jiangnan autumn flavours, including seasonal Suzhou specialities such as Yangcheng Lake hairy crab and gorgon fruit.
Coffee Festival
📍 Ligongdi
📅 October 15–18
Towards the end of Jinji Lake Night, Ligongdi hosts a coffee festival featuring dozens of local and national coffee brands and special autumn drinks.
Note that the coffee festival continues for two days after Jinji Lake Night itself finishes on October 16.
Getting Around
Because the installations are spread around Jinji Lake, don't expect to see everything comfortably on foot in a single evening.
A free Jinji Lake Night shuttle bus operates during the festival:
Friday, Saturday, Sunday & public holidays: 19:00–22:00
Approximately every 15–30 minutes.
The Jinji Lake Holiday Tourism Line 1030 also operates on weekends and public holidays.
Good to Know
Free admission: The main outdoor light installations and shows are free.
Best place to start: Moon Harbour, particularly if you're short on time.
Best time: After dark. Some installations are also designed to be viewed during daylight, particularly Between Spaces and the floral installation at Jinji Station 09.
Don't try to see everything at once: The festival covers a substantial stretch of Jinji Lake. Pick an area or use the festival shuttle.
Robot fans: Go before September 27 — the Robot Block finishes well before the rest of the festival.
National Day: Expect the lakefront to be particularly busy during the October holiday, and check on-site information for any changes to performance times.
